Every day we are affected by invisible forces – movements in the air, scents, sounds. While we live in a world often focused on sight, we form visceral connections through other sensory realms. The unseen can be conduits to different, imagined worlds. A specific fragrance carried by the wind can trigger intense memories. The soft breeze against our skin is like contact with a ghost, the wind whispering secret codes in our ears. We can find connections to new dimensions and different times; we can spark dreams of what can be.
Invisible Tethers is an installation at The Bird House by Brad E. Rose. It immerses visitors in the wind through sound – an eight-foot built wind harp and accompanying sound piece called “Unbound Constellations” – and a custom-made scent. Invisible Tethers invites the audience to sit, to dream, to remember. A physical representation of the sound piece is constructed from a maple branch that fell in a storm and golden string. Blank cards line the walls inside The Bird House and participants are encouraged to write down or draw what they imagine or remember and attach it back to the wall to hang through the winter months, falling apart and fading back into the ether.
The Bird House is a suburban backyard micro-gallery intended to break down barriers and stretch definitions. The lines ordinarily drawn between home and public, between community and individual, between art and audience, between artist and gallery are all stretched outside of their usual bounds and expanded.
The Bird House was started and is run by Eden Hemming and Brad Rose. It is an ongoing project from Foxy Digitalis. It joins an ecosystem and finds connection with like-minded projects that came before like Queen Rose Art House, Neighbors Gallery, Cult Love House, Half Bath Gallery, and Sperry Sounds.
